I know this isn't a magic wand, but I find that if there is some
<package> that I really have a lot invested in, I typically document
for myself what I did to setup this <package>. These are text file
notes, snippets of config files or even full-blown config files.
If I don't have such notes for <package>, well, then, the package must
not have been too important to me.
Package management systems like rpm are excellent, but some of my
notes are older than Linux is....I would be lost without my notes.
