Can a browser based application write to files on a local hard disk?

Of course, this is limiting the app to Firefox.  You could do the  
same thing with a trusted Java applet, and handle the UI through the  
Javascript/Java bridge thingy.  I don't think Java is as widely  
deployed as Sun thinks it is on home-user machines, so 'download  
Firefox'/'download Java' might be a wash.
