i.e., insert Scientific Linux 5.2, CD1 (or DVD), and boot it like so:
boot: linux rescue
Does certainly sound like you've got a dedicated /var, and its been
corrupted.
Alternatively, you should also be able to boot into single-user mode and
perform repairs from there.
