bash/backquote weirditude

 - Copy /bin/bash from another system into /tmp and test
   that one?  Maybe also some of the shared libs it uses...?

 - Temporarily put all startup scripts bash might be using
   somewhere it can't find them?  If problem goes away,
   reintroduce scripts one by one...

 - Reinstall bash (or libs) from the RPM?

 - Watch bash via strace from another session?

 - Tinfoil pyramid over CPU?
