  Should be.  Isn't always.  Randall Schwartz ended up with a felony
conviction, a few $100K in fines, and facing jail time for doing what
(he claimed) was just part of his job at Intel.  Point being: Life is
not fair.  Cover your ass.

  How absurd it would be depends on the company and the network.  If
the network people don't want you managing the cluster network on your
own, then just tell them, "Okay, I've got N nodes I need network drops
for; when can you have that done?"  And in some companies, the answer
may well be "We'll have that hooked up in a week".

  If IT's answers prevent you from getting your job done, go to your
supervisor and say, "IT's policies are preventing me from getting my
job done".  If your boss tells you to ignore IT policies, make sure
you have a paper (or email) trail, because your boss may decide you
should take the fall if things get ugly.
