Writing FOSS for Win32: A good LUG meeting topic?

I got my daughter a Dell (Windows XP) laptop for Christmas, and we have tried to
add only free software. Right away, we set up Firefox as the default browser,
and added OpenOffice for her school work.
* Last week, she needed to remove red eye from one of her photos. We installed
GIMP, but couldn't figure out how to use the redeye reduction feature (kept
changing the color of the whole face.) I finally moved the photo to another
machine and used PaintShop Pro.
* Even though the machine came with a DVD/RW drive, there was no DVD writing
software. I was initially going to add RecordNow, which is on the other Win
machines, but then found a product called DVD Flick that did the job just fine.
So far, we've found free software on an as-needed basis. But, what I'd really
find helpful is a survey of software to add onto a Windows machine so that all
you've paid for is the OS. I know this isn't quite what you were talking about
in having a session on "Writing FOSS apps..." but it reminded me of my own
current goal in the FOSS area.
