FWIW, Cream is a GVIM port designed to have all of Vim's power but be 
easier to use for newbies. I can't stand it, personally, but I'm a Vim 
afficionado, so that probably doesn't mean anything.

Additionally, Ruby, Python, and Perl all work great on Win32 as a 
scripting language.

Of course, I'll throw in the obligatory Open Office mention: it's a 
great open source office suite, and, with the exception of it's odd 
color handling and the annoyance of requiring me to click on my 
editor/TR/coauthor comments individually to view them, it's great.

Works great on Linux as well.
