Phones for Asterisk and single-pair old phone wiring?

You might also look into X.25.  It's a packet networking technology
designed to run over ordinary phone lines and (used to be?) common in
office settings.  Last I checked, Linux had an X.25 protocol stack.
If you could find any X.25 phones, you might be able to get them
talking to Asterisk over those crummy old 2-conductor phone lines.
