broken serial port

Hello All,
I have a serial port issue with my computer at home. As of last night, I am
unable to communicate with my 56k external serial modem, for dial-up
internet.
I am using a computer that has a dual core processor, the motherboard is
intel DG965RY. The motherboard has a "serial port header". I pulled a
"camera port" off an old pc and plugged the (9-pin) connector into the
header on the motherboard. The serial port has worked for me and I have used
dial-up internet several times over the last couple weeks.
I use Ubuntu (Hardy). I set it up recently. I bought the computer (used) a
few weeks back. I have used dial-up internet to download a couple additional
packages.
Last night I got a message (gnome-ppp) that said "no resonse from the
modem". Sometimes there would be no sound, sometimes there was a little
static, sometimes you could hear loud modem noise in addition to heavy
static.
I tried using another modem. I have two identical USR external serial
modems. I Got the same results.
I also tried using the command line program using the "pon" command. I Got
the same results.
I would guess that the serial port interface on the motherboard is broken.
Is it possible that there is some other issue? Hardware failure is really
rare, at least I've never had any experiences with it.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jesse
