I was able to boot a vintage 1997 ThinkPad 770ED with 256MB RAM from a 
Fedora 10 Live CD.  It doesn't take much memory to boot.  It did take a 
good 10 minutes though...

Can you escape into CMOS during the boot sequence and run diagnostics on 
the hardware?
