I've fed lots of 4x6 photos through my ScanSnap S510 and gotten
reasonable results out of it.  They're actually arguably better than the
results of scanning 8.5x11" paper, as there's less skew visible in the
results.  The only thing that didn't work well was scanning photos that
turned out to be "professional" prints, which have a brilliant green
line about 2/3 of the way across, possibly as a way of marking them so
they can't be copied.
