Thanks for the pointer. My Canon A70 (circa 2002) was long out of 
warranty when it died.

Canon apparently has repaired a number of models for free or cheap, done 
some no-cost recalls, although they also have a reputation for rejecting 
warranty work somewhat arbitrarily. It's hard to judge these things from 
reading the internet, since public posters usually represent the extreme 
experiences. However, I was pleased with the quality of the camera at 
the time and would buy another one.

The fact that the hardware is somewhat hackable is a plus.
