NFS stops responding

There should be no technical reason why both machines can't act as both
clients and servers. My initial comment was based on troubleshooting.
But, there are a number of NFS options that you can explore, such as
export readonly, soft mount, that could alleviate the problem, but the
first step is to stop exporting on one system and check the stability,
then resume the export and stop the export on the other system (I think
you mentioned that you did this, at least partially). Also, are you
using SAMBA on those systems? On my systems at work, I am using both NFS
and SAMBA from one system without any issues.
