Besides the other answers, GRUB can switch to a serial console. A null
modem cable to a PC running a terminal program (minicom, hyperterminal,
kermit, ??) will work.
I worked somewhere developing hardware drivers and they needed the post GRUB
messages. They used a serial terminal server and conserver to capture &
share access.
I'm using conserver now for some embedded stuff on 40-50 serial ports.
