And there are some benchmarks showing a toss-up among certain browser 
functions, but the key is that Firefox's entire UI is rendered in a 
single thread, which makes for awful pauses on the fastest of machines 
(Thunderbird can suffer similarly).

People have been complaining about this for ages (maybe the design made 
sense in 1999) but now that Chrome is trouncing their UI, they're 
finally going to fix that in Firefox, in a 4.x release probably.

I don't wind up using Chrome much, but the competition is welcome.
