Can you spell out what you did?  I've used Debian for years, and the
only way I've found to hose up apt-get or aptitude (which does a
better job of resolving conflicts) is to use dpkg --force-(insert
option here).     If you used the --force options of dpkg you take the
risk of hosing your system - it assumes you actually know what you're
doing and really do want to override the constraints.
