I've had Linux on a Thinkpad T42 (iirc) and it worked great.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/ is a great resource

Also, Woot has a ThinkPad L512 today for $500, can't speak to it's
quality, but just thought I'd mention it. http://woot.com/
