There's a tale that goes like this:
The army needs boots for it's soldiers. So it contracts a
manufacturer for 10,000 boots.
They get a delivery of 10,000 left boots.
So they fire that contractor, and reissue the contract, this time
specifying that they need 10,000 pairs of boots.
They get 10,000 boxes of boots; each box contains two left boots.
So they fire that contractor, reissue the contract again, saying
they need 10,000 pairs of boots, left and right feet both.
So they get 10,000 pairs of boots, each one sized for a doll.
Etc...
