Hello folks,
I work at WSI Corporation in Andover, MA. We design and build some very
cool Linux based products used by a larger percentage of TV and Cable
News operations around the world. We currently have an opening in our
Media Criticals Team.
Check out the job requirements:
Software Engineer – Media Criticals Team
Purpose of Position:
Be part of a team that is responsible for the timely resolution of
customer-reported issues arising from the use of complex software
applications in broadcast television. The challenges include isolating
the problem from incomplete or misleading bug reports within large code
bases in interrelated applications. The team focuses on issues affecting
the customer’s ability to use the applications effectively. The primary
duties will focus on debugging C++ code, but there is a component that
will develop system monitoring and information gathering utilities to
assist the Customer Support group in proactively addressing situations
before they become problems. Good communications skills will be needed
to obtain the information necessary to get to the core of the issue,
replicate the problem, and interface with other software engineers if
necessary.
You will need to use your communications skills to extract the right
information directly from customers who are under the gun to produce a
live show and from in-house customer support representatives who may not
have the full story. You will apply your patience and problem-solving
aptitude to replicate, isolate and fix software defects in fielded
applications, as well as to sharing those skills with other team
members. You will be a member of an international team sharing
responsibility for addressing critical issues, developing scripts and
programs to monitor system performance and health, and resolving
long-standing defects. Your duties lie primarily on working with
existing code without responsibility for developing new features. This
team sits between Customer Service and Software Development.
WSI, the premier provider of data and software for weather broadcasters
is located in a state-of-the-art facility north of Boston. A
wholly-owned subsidiary of Landmark Communications, we are a sister
company to The Weather Channel.
Specific Duties:
The person that fills this position will write software to improve the
user experience. The duties include:
• Applying advanced debugging skills to ferret out the causes of
critical problems.
• Applying an aptitude for debugging complex software systems, including
OOD and/or component-based design.
• Developing and enhancing debugging skills by learning new techniques
and tools.
• Working within a professional software development process with the
appropriate checks and balances.
• Coordinating with and developing effective communications with team
members in other time zones.
• Interfacing with Customer Service Representatives to prioritize the
work and deliver solutions in a timely manner.
• Interfacing with software engineers in the applications development
team to ensure robust and integrated solutions.
Requirements:
• At least 3 years commercial experience including hands on with
development of an interactive multimedia (preferably 3d) application.
• Solid C++ and understanding of Object Oriented Design
• Comfortable with Linux and other Unix operating systems
• Problem-solving/puzzle-solving mentality
• Ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Csh, Bash, Python, Perl script writing
• Strong work ethic
• Patience
• Desire to learn and to share acquired knowledge
• Good documentation and communication skills
Additional Skills (desired):
• Domain knowledge and experience with weather data
• Experience with Nvidia graphics
• Experience with OpenGL
• Experience with X and Motif
