I've been using GnuCash for over 3 years now for my personal finance
needs; i.e. a replacement for Quicken. At this point in time, it is
not ready for use as a small business book keeping application. It
currently doesn't do invoicing, though you could probably set up
AR/AP accounts within it. It also doesn't yet support recurring
transactions. (actually, the CVS release does, but it's beta).

I don't know off the top of my head if there are any stable,
open source/free software accounting solutions. GnuCash does have as
it's goal to be the free and open personal/small busines accounting
program. Unfortunately it's quite there yet, and that doesn't help
you now :(

I do recommend checking out the GnuCash web site. There are links
from there to several other sites which may contain the answers to
your questions.
