How about 'xsetroot'.  I believe this utility comes with the standard 
X package.  I've been using it for years from within my .xsession and 
.xinitrc file(s)

You can also do some neat cursor tricks.  Try this :)

	xsetroot -cursor_name trek 

For other cursor names check out /usr/include/X11/cursorfont.h

There really aren't any exciting cursors, however, you can create 
your own and save it in a bitmap file from what I saw in the man page 
for xsetroot.
