Why not use EVMS, which is from IBM, runs native on Linux, has a GUI, 
and is (supposedly) far more flexible than LVM?

Did you not know about EVMS at the time, or were you already heavily 
dependant upon LVM?

I'm not advocating EVMS over LVM.  I have no real first hand 
knowledge of either.  But based on my cursory review of their 
respective feature sets, EVMS seems like it would be a better tool 
overall.  Especially since it's slated to be included in the 2.6/3.0 
kernel.
