Okay, I've messed with NFS on my box at home, and at my old job and it's worked fine and seemed to do very well under heavy load. I know this is nothing compaired to the ammount that you will be doing but I just wanted to give you a respose that yes I've used it, and yes, it works well.

Now, as far as the Sun invented NFS, big woop, they also published the standards for it, any other *NIX or *BSD that conforms to those standards should be fine. Based on what you said I think a Linux solution would be a great bang for the buck solution. But I would agree with some of the other people that posted saying to just get a Dell or something similar and put your own linux distro on it.

In fact, after reading the stuff about the pogo servers, they just use RH8 with a modified WebMin.

Pogoconf

The Pogoconf system is a slightly modified Webmin install and includes some online documentation. The print user's guide, Workstation Quick Start Guide, and a Networking Guide are included as online docs.

I was glad to see that Pogoconf/Webmin was set up to use HTTPS by default instead of HTTP, making it a bit more secure. However, once I was logged in, the session seemed open-ended. Putting an expiration on the session would make it more secure.

Overall, the Pogoconf/Webmin is a nice addition, but it's not a huge incentive in and of itself. It doesn't have any exciting or unique features to make it a "must have." I'd really like to see Pogo (and other Linux PC manufacturers) implement something like Ximian's Red Carpet for updating their machines.
