I'll interpret the question as: "Can the Linux (host) OS access files of the Windows (client) OS, even when the client is not running?"
Yes and no.
1) YEs: Your expressed concern is `all the Windows files are directly accessible by Linux'. Exporting a Linux share via SMB satisfies this requirement. From Windows/vmware, just save your documents to "\\linux\mystuff\foobar.ext" and it's available in Linux "directly".
You also mention "rather than via SMB.", meaning you don't want to use SMB (or considered a SMB configuration other than when I suggest). I'm not sure I understand why. Perhaps I misunderstand your question.
2) Yes #2: IF you use disk partitions with VMWare. Just mount the partition under Linux and unmount it before again running the client OS.
3) If you use only disk images, then no (unless there's a mount tool for vmware images, which there may be I don't know..).
