  I've never seen or heard of such a thing before.  I certainly don't think
it makes ready the document easier -- rather, it sticks out like a sore
thumb, and makes deciphering the intended word decidedly harder.  You're
kidding, right?  :-)

  Ah, wait!  A search for "fi ligature" on Google turned up this as the
second match:

  Sure enough, that matches my symptoms.  Apparently, my funky character is,
in fact, a "pound symbol" (a British pound, I presume).  The fix mentioned
in the above URL (editing the dvips config.pdf file) works for me.

  (BTW, the first link matched in Google does a good job explaining what a
ligature is, and gives figures to illustrate.)
