I recommend you shop arround for the hardware you want, and install
Linux yourself. Because of Microsoft's contracts with the PC vendors,
you will find it difficult to get a system with Linux preinstalled at
home PC prices other than WalMart.
Penguin Computing is one company that provides Linux solutions.

BTW: I have two Compaq laptops running Linux (SuSE 8.1) very happily.
Additionally, the BLU is having a Linux installfest on Saturday.
Another possibility is to go to one of the local computer flea markets.
There is a KGP show this weekend in Marlborough, Ma
(http://www.pcshow.co). You can normally pick up systems configured the
way you want them relatively inexpensively.
BTW: I timed my installation of SuSE 8.1 (DVD) at 40 mins on my laptop
from scratch, but maintaining my old home directory.
