Protecting from Code Red with Apache Proxy?

Hey everyone,
I'm trying to think of ways to protect a windows box running IIS.
For various reasons, it needs to run IIS, we can't control it with an ACL
and the large group of people accessing this doesn't make it practical to
limit the access to it.
I've been reading around and it looks like a reverse proxy -will-
protect against these kinds of attacks. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
Numerous sites have said it's a good way, but I thought I'd ask the
experts.
