First, in your rescue system, I would mount the root (and /boot if it is
separate) file system just to make sure it is ok. Check the
<root>/etc/fstab file to make sure the file systems are correctly
listed.
Then check to make sure the entries in the lilo.conf and
/boot/grub/grub.menulst are correct. If not, make the appropriate
corrections. If you are using grub, make sure that the appropriate stage
files are in /boot/grub.
The grub info pages have some pretty decent documentation on activating
grub. You can also use grub to make a boot floppy.
Generally, when I upgrade my system, I create a new root file system in
another partition so that if I screw it up, or if there is a problem, I
can easily boot back into my old system. Once I am confident that the
new system is ok, I copy the new root file system to the old root file
system (usually while running a standalone or rescue system). This way I
always have at least 1 known good root file system.
