Word to that.  I have to use this kludgy software to generate HTML 
reports of data kept in a Versant database, that only runs on NT (so I 
have to VNC into a remote machine just to do this).  The software is 
pretty phenomenal in terms of its scope, but our need for it is so 
limited that I have set about implementing my own solution in Java. 
(The prototype seems to work fairly well.)

I think sometimes it's easier to just roll your own solution, but of 
course this wholly depends on how much you need and how much you can do.
