Well, since we are pretty sure that MS doesn't implement very good 
security, we can (reasonably?) assume that the communications to 
their server probably aren't encrypted.  So, if you really want to 
find out, use a sniffer, start an update, and look at the packets.

That will tell you definitively what's going on.  I would gladly do 
this, except that I have no Windows products with which to test.
