At my previous place of regular, FTE we used IMHO web mail. It's pretty
good, and fairly customizable for appearance. There are a couple of
drawbacks:

1) it's written in Pike, a rather obscure C++-like programming language
2) it pretty much requires that you use the Roxen web server, since it
works best as a Roxen module.

Roxen is a very nice web server though it doesn't get the attention that
Apache does. It helps if you learn Pike, because Roxen has built-in
support for modules written in Pike.

For more info. on Roxen: http://www.roxen.com/

For more info. on IMHO: http://www.lysator.liu.se/~stewa/IMHO/

They are both very well done, if you don't mind learning something new.
