Anyway, so this isn't a totally wasted message, I'll add that at the
University of Kentucky College of Engineering we almost always used
Debian on our Linux servers. Our file, email, and database servers ran
FreeBSD, while the servers that students would log into to do their work
ran Debian GNU/Linux. We also had a Solaris server and two HP/UX
machines for those applications that didn't come in a Linux version.
There were also Windows NT and 2000 servers, but I wasn't responsible
for them, so I don't know what they did beyond storing apps and data for
some of the Windows clients in the college.

On faculty workstations, I would install Red Hat unless the faculty
member expressed a desire for some other distribution. Generally, they
either wanted Red Hat, or they didn't care which distro was on there.
They were generally more concerned with what applications would be on
the machine.

So, like I said earlier, just go with Debian, particularly since you
want to use apt. There are many alternatives and choices, but you may as
well go with what makes you comfortable.

BTW, almost the entire CS dept at UK runs Linux on the desktop.
