In the Financial Times yesterday it was reported that the government of
Thailand is supporting a program to sell "end of life" (but new) desktop
and notebook computers to Thai consumers at cut-rate prices in order to allow
them to get computers into their homes. They estimate that a million new
desktop and laptop machines will be sold at prices ranging from 230 USD (for
a desktop) to 500 USD for a notebook.....and all of the machines will be
pre-loaded with Linux "instead of the expensive Microsoft software". This
program began because the equivalent of the IT department of their government
heard about the Walmart computers, and challenged his country to do the same.
