An important consideration is that by using Linux from the outset, their
users won't become dependent on Microsoft applications to the extent that
they won't use anything else. That's one of the biggest problems with
suggesting that someone use Linux - the user is often completely unwilling
to try anything that won't run their favorite application be that Word,
Excel, Quicken, or some other "must have" application.

P.S. I had recommended Open Office to one of my clients and wouldn't you
know, an application they wanted to use was dependent on Microsoft Word
macros. Guess what the Open Office version of Word doesn't have? (Or at
least didn't have a year ago)

Subject: Thailand

In the Financial Times yesterday it was reported that the government of
Thailand is supporting a program to sell "end of life" (but new) desktop
and notebook computers to Thai consumers at cut-rate prices in order to
allow
them to get computers into their homes. They estimate that a million new
desktop and laptop machines will be sold at prices ranging from 230 USD (for
a desktop) to 500 USD for a notebook.....and all of the machines will be
pre-loaded with Linux "instead of the expensive Microsoft software". This
program began because the equivalent of the IT department of their
government
heard about the Walmart computers, and challenged his country to do the
same.
