X errors

I get the following errors when I exit an X session. I am running a
Dell PowerEdge 4600 server with Red Hat 7.3 and the original kernel
as installed by Dell.
Gtk-WARNING **: invalid cast from (NULL) pointer to 'GtkOptionMenu'
Gtk- CRITICAL **: file gtkoptionmenu.c: line 248
(gtk_option_menu_set_history): assertion 'option_menu != NULL' failed
waiting for X server to shut down Gdk-ERROR **: fatal IO error 104
(Connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0.
The server boots into run level 3 and after logging in I type startx
& to get the default gnome desktop. I don't know if this is a gnome
problem or an X problem. I have support with Dell and they said I
probably need some updates, possibly including the kernel. I'm leery
about upgrading the kernel because this server has several SCSI
cards, one of which has a Powervault set of disk drives set up as
raid 5, and I don't want to screw that up. Since this system will
eventually be set up so no one can log into it I don't know how far I
should go to solve the problem. Maybe I should change the default
window manager to KDE and see what happens.
