GoDaddy.com has been a pleasure to work with in my experience, and one 
of the cheapest there is (transfer your domain for like $7 and get a 
one-year extension in the process).  Regular registrations are like 
$8/yr.  Their online account control center offers everything you need 
in a very intuitive way, with no bs or proprietary lingo and extra 
hoops.  The only thing you need to do is wade past their 'add-on' 
services -- which they conveniently present as OPT-IN.
