I think that what mod meant was that the old behavior is considered
broken, and the new behavior is thought to fix it. I believe he
already acknowledged that this behavior is different from the behavior
in bash 2.x and previous.
FWIW, the main comment I wanted to offer was that I think both
behaviors are useful. Does the man page for the new version suggest a
way to make the behavior switchable? I can not remember what behavior
historic versions of Bourne shell exhibited, and I'm curious. At the
moment I have no access to a machine from which I might make that
determination...
Anyone?
