OT: Register.com scam

In case you might consider registering a domain through register.com,
you should be aware that they are completely incompetent at performing
basic registry services, while they excel at schemes to grossly
overcharge and/or extort money from their customers.
I accidentally registered a domain through register.com a few years ago
because they setup a promotion with Staples.com.
Long story short, they just deleted my domain without notice, and tried
to get me to pay $235 to 'recover' it from them. No notifications of
renewal or expiration were ever sent to my valid email address which
they had on record. They are apparently aware of this basic operational
flaw, because their representative volunteered to waive the $200 service
fee because mine was a 'Staples.com' account.
Of course, I still had to pay $35 for one year of registration (since
they had my domain hostage in 'delete' status), and for the priviledge
of having my domain go down for over a week. Actually, they are
probably cooking their books too, or at least covering up their
fraudulent practices. They said they would have to charge me the full
$235, and then issue a credit for the $200. Come to think of it, I
wonder why I should trust them to refund the $200.
