Why archive to CD? Why not just keep it online? Hard disk space is
cheap. My time is expensive.

A large part of this thread and it's children revolves around the fact
that, given an intelligent design, it should be quite possible for the
system to handle thousands of messages in a single mail folder without any
significant slowdown.
Even given the lack of intelligent design, simply organization will
alleviate most performance problems. For example, I have a ton of mbox
mailboxes, mainly because I'm too lazy to convert them over to something
better. But because I keep my mail well organized, even mbox rarely slows
down.
