For 2D or 3D?
For 2D, I think you'll be okay. I'll second the recommendation by Travis
Roy <travis at scootz.net> for TNT-based cards; I used to run one at
1600x1200x24bpp at 72Hz for years, with stock XFree drivers. It worked well.
Actually, it still works well; it's just not running at that resolution any
more.
For 3D, from what I've read, you're going to need proprietary support from
OEMs for anything decent.
