Just append '1' at the end of the 'kernel' line and boot, and it will go to single user mode.

AHA! Seems it was running lilo in a 'stealth' mode that did not 
advertise itself. The left shift key
trick brought it out of hiding and I've straightened things out. Thanks 
Warren!
