If you don't learn how to use a table saw before you use it you'll 
probably lose some fingers.

If you don't know how to keep a Windows system patched, you're not 
going to lose a finger.  You might help devastate the US economy in a 
swarm attack, but you won't lose a finger.

Odds, certainty and immediacy are all at play.
