I think it translates very well.

I am not sure about New Hampshire law, but I remember what it was in Maryland
where I grew up, and I bet it is not much different:

If you do not lock your doors, then the person entering your house is just
"trespassing". If you lock your doors, and the person has to "break in", then
it is "breaking and entering".

If you do not post your property, then people can legitimately go on it. If
they get hurt on your property, you could be liable. If you post the property
(and follow guidelines in doing this), then they are "trespassing", and the
liability falls back to them. This is one reason why so many land owners post
their property. A lot don't really care if you use their property, but they
want "protection". Hunters know that often if you go to the property owner
of posted property, show that you are not an idiot (leaving closed gates open,
shooting toward the house, throwing trash around) that the property owner may
allow you access.

If you have a swimming pool and a little kid falls in and drowns, you are
responsible, even if that kid was "trespassing". If you build a fence around
your pool and lock the gate, then you have done "due diligence", but you should
also post the pool (telling people not to come on your property).

The sign-up for the WiFi for Panera Bread was "due diligence". Not
guaranteeing bad things would happen from script kiddies, spammers, etc. but
a minimum of "due diligence".
