Using External USB Drive for Linux Installation

Last year, I picked up a Western Digital external 160 Gb with USB 2 and 
Firewire ports to back up various Mac, Linux and Windows boxes around 
the office, It "feels" like the Firewire file transfer rates are 
faster, although I haven't benchmarked it, either.
