I queried the Indymedia techies on this concept to see what if 
anything might be considered by IMCs.  I was told that 
free/opensource search engines using many PCs exist already (I 
have not yet searched, though I am looking at GNU/FSF) as well as 
some discussion specific to Indymedia.  So far, this is what was 
found at the IMC documentation site (with some links therein):

I need to listen again to that rms BSF talk to see if that issue 
was included.  If not, maybe when the Q&A portion gets posted to 
imc-boston it will be.
