FWIW, I was installing Debian on a newish HP box
at work last year that had a nice Broadcom gigE on
the motherboard but the "normal" Broadcom driver
couldn't handle it. I can't quite remember why but I
think it's because the older Broadcom chipsets were
compatible with (I think it's) the Tigon3 interface
model but that newer BCM5782 chipset was different
enough that the Debian driver choked.
Anyway, even though Broadcom doesn't always play
nice when it comes to providing chip specs and FOSS
drivers, in this case there was a driver source
package available on their WWW site that's been
working fine for us.
