It sure will be nice to have some (O'Reilly) door prizes to add
incentive to join in regular meetings and other events.
I've mentioned it before, but it's worth noting again that if the book
your looking for is not an O'Reilly publication, but it is a technical
book, you just can't beat BookPool.com. They have the deepest discounts,
easy to use website, and quick shipping even when you choose 'ground'. I
tend to buy my O'Reilly books direct from the publisher to provide
financial support to O'Reilly, but in a cash crunch, BookPool will
invariably have the lower price on O'Reilly books too.
Another point worth mentioning is the mediawiki engine which has
built-in support for book-finding and book-shopping by ISBN number. If
you give mediawiki an ISBN number, it will spit out a list of library
searches, online bookseller searches etc. to make finding and/or buying
the book easy. No, this is not an affiliate program. It's just a tool
for finding the book.
For example, I've started to catalog my bookshelf at this page
http://freephile.com/nbpt-gnus/index.php/Books_To_Read. In every review,
I post the ISBN, which the mediawiki engine turns into a list of
searches at a few booksellers[1]. The wikipedia.com Free Encyclopedia
project (powered by the mediawiki engine) has an even more impressive
array of search options. The same ISBN as before leads to this result[2]
[1]
http://freephile.com/nbpt-gnus/index.php?title=Special:Booksources&isbn=0596003161
[2]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Booksources&isbn=0596003064
And btw, if anyone would like to provide a book review or if you have an
opinion on one of the books that I've listed, you are entirely welcome
to edit/create any page on the Newburyport Gnus website (www.nbptgnus.org).
