sendmail SMARTHOST

If I only care about sending email, not receiving, is sendmail's SMARTHOST the 
simplest way to do this?  Or is there a simplier way to configure for outbound 
mail?

I ask because on RH8 it took me quite a while to get it to work, and I never 
really understood the hows and whys.  I'm now trying to do the same on FC3, 
but having trouble again.  Googling has given me things to try but I just 
can't get it.

If anyone has advice or pointers to good websites I'd appreciate it.
