[OT] Re: RFC: Make political discussion off-topic by rule (was: America ...)

My turn. I've been a member of this list for about 7 years now. Quite
frankly I'm disappointed about all this. First let me point out that
the *very* reason this OT discussion is so large is because of all the
complaining NOT because of the original content. If it was just left
alone it would have quickly fizzled out - no big deal. If you don't
like the topic - leave it alone. You wouldn't even have to worry about
"begrudging the time" to skip over because it would not have been so out
of control without all whining.
See? Now I'm whining. ;-)
I think it's somewhat natural to occasionally bring out OT discussions
because of the fact that once you get to know a group of people with
common interest and even meet with them (like members of the list tend
to do) there's a personal rapport that tends to build up and it's quite
natural (and even healthy) to want to see what they think even if it
isn't about, God forbid, Linux. Several people give their comments.
It's done. That's it. If you don't like - leave it alone - it will go
away on it's own.
This one has only gotten so big because of complaining.
That's my 2 cents.

<flame seriousness="HHOS">
I don't recall anyone suggesting a moderated list, just some
demonstration of self-control. At a minimum I'd say any such threads
should have [OT] in the subject line, so my computer can do the
filtering, rather than ME doing it. Maybe you don't mind vgrepping
out the noise, but I begrudge the time necessary to "simply skip over"
the garbage. I'd rather political discussion not directly relevant to
the LUG and Linux were not here at all, since conventions like the
[OT] are generally forgotten in practice.

I'm hoping people will be polite enough to keep discussions which are
not related to Linux or the LUG from dropping the signal-to-noise
ratio of the group to the point where there's as much noise as there
is signal.
