Phantom sound card?

With great help from Kevin I'm getting very close to recording NPR streams.

The first issue was that realplayer needed X, but this is a server so I 
don't have X.

I found a great program called trplayer that seems like it will do the 
trick.

My next problem however is that I have no sound card. Since the object 
is not to output the audio to headphones are speakers is there any way 
to setup a "phantom" soundcard or something like that to just convert 
the stream.
